MEETING PROGRAM:

Ikebana: From Culture to Art, From Nature to Abstract -
A Quest of a Lifetimez

Guest speakerThanh Nguyen - Ikebana Artist and Instructor

Thanh will take us on a journey through 600 years of this profound Japanese culture artform starting from the Shogun era.

Thanh was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, in a family of 12 siblings. Her family moved to the South in 1954 after the signing of the Geneva Convention dividing her country into North and South. In 1975, at the fall of Saigon, she evacuated with her entire family of ten to America and settled in Waterloo, Iowa. She spent the next forty years in hi- tech before taking an early retirement and began teaching ikebana. Ikebana is the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers.

For thirty-two years, Thanh devoted her training with the focus on two schools of ikebana, Sogetsu and Wafu. She was twice elected President of Ikebana International San Francisco and President of Ikebana Teachers Federation. In March 2020, she and her family moved from the Bay Area to the Central Coast where they purchased a vineyard property. She is currently teaching on zoom and at Cuesta College. The land of wine and cowboy is a dream for her and her husband, and they find the decision to leave Silicon Valley was one of the best they have made.

Thanh is known by a number of our members who highly recommend her fascinating way of sharing the beautiful art ikebana with others. I look forward to seeing each of you at our first Fall meeting!
